Weight Loss - Healthy Food Alternatives

Grill, steam, bake or microwave your food, don't fry!

According to recent studies from the American Institute for Cancer Research, an eating plan that is based on grilled and barbequed meat being cooked over an open flame or fried, can be linked to stomach, rectal and colon cancers

By grilling, steaming, microwaving and baking your food rather than adding fat and artery clogging cholesterol by frying, you are essentially locking-in and preserving the vital nutrients. Better still, having a serving of raw or partially cooked veggies are a good source of fiber, does little to alter the vitamins and minerals and is much better for you. Stir fry veggies are a great idea, because you use less oil and the cooking time is halved. Lets' face it, what would you rather eat, washed out greens or something that is crispy, full of colour and flavoursome?

Try marinating fish and chicken (without the skin because most of the fat is underneath the skin and in the skin). Grill by using an oil free marinade, it is much healthier for you and is lower in calories. Another alternative with your meats and fish is to use a health grill without using any additives at all. Just go totally natural!

Eat whole fruit rather than drinking juice.

Whole fruits are full of fiber and are a rich source of vitamins and minerals as well as being high in antioxidants. Whole fruits give that full feeling and are much lower in calories, not to mention that they are better as the sugars that naturally occur in fruit has less of an impact with concern totooth decay as the structure of the fruit contains the sugar. However, when you place the fruit through a juicer it releases that stored sugar and over consumption can cause damage to the teeth.

Juice can still be a healthy choice, but a better option than a juice made totally from fruit is to try a vegetable juice. At first a juice made from vegetables may be a little too much, so in the beginning add a small amount of apple or orange, ½ serve will do, just to make it a little sweet. A great combination to try is carrot, celery, beetroot, ginger (if you like) and a small amount of apple or orange. After a while you will be able to drop the fruit completely.

When drinking juices, it is also best to be aware of the serving sizes and ask for a small, especially if it is a fruit juice. A small orange juice alone uses approx 5 oranges. Now that is a lot of fruit to have in one day!
